A SENIOR citizen who started a fire to burn rubbish despite protests from his wife, paid dearly for it when he was killed by the fire he started.

The body of Mat Yaakob, 64, was found burnt waist down at his house in Kampung Batas in Jitra, Kedah, on Saturday, according to Harian Metro.

It was believed that Mat had passed out after inhaling smoke from the pile of burning rubbish while the hot weather had caused the fire to spread fast.

According to the victim's wife Radiah Abdul Hamid, she had told her husband not to start a fire as the weather was hot.

“I got worried when I did not see him when the fire became big and got my sister and her husband to look for him.

“I was heartbroken to know the way he had died. If only I could walk, I could have saved him,” stroke-hit Radiah said.
